We throw away food, every day, about a third of global production. We waste food, thus debasing the labor and environmental resources used to produce it, at a crucial time of erosion of natural resources, crisis of ecosystems and biodiversity. Food waste is one of the most serious emergencies of our time, a functional paradox of a bankrupt economic model that overproduces food to waste, both along the first links of the production chain and at the time of distribution. a paradigm shift is as imperative as it is complex, at times utopian. in the immediate term, however, we can act. We can reduce losses, safeguard food safety, restore value to food, recover it. we can redistribute unsold stock to those who cannot access it, we can adopt more sustainable behaviors. We can. flessofab launches the #lostinfood campaign to raise awareness of the issues of overproduction and food waste, drawing inspiration from the celebrated ‘composite heads’ of arcimboldo, an eccentric mannerist genius. at the center of the project, not portraits but anthropomorphic aggregations, elaborated according to a deconstructing approach that cites the counter-design lesson of master ettore sottsass, to solicit new awareness about the necessary transformation of the food system.
